Skip to contentYou may not know it, but you could be grinding your teeth during the night and putting your oral health at risk.
A bite splint is a custom made appliance that fits over your upper teeth. It is designed to prevent bruxism, that is the excessive clenching and grinding of teeth that is not part of normal chewing movements. This is often a nocturnal habit, but may also occur during the day.
The most common reason our patients require a bite splint is to prevent or help manage bruxism. Using a mouth splint will protect your teeth from not only grinding but also clenching.
Dental bite splints are made up of mouth guards and bite plates. The splints are typically custom-made by your dentist this allows for the perfect fit and comfortable feel. The splint is made from clear plastic and will fit between and over your lower and upper teeth.
Teeth grinding can lead to a variety of side effects including:
Bite splints have a smooth interior surface that lines the gums and teeth. On the outside, they have a tough, wear-resistant exterior. The splint is worn at night time and will aim to alleviate the effects of tooth wear and trauma by acting as a protective medium between the upper and lower teeth.

Non-permissive bite splints are specifically designed to limit the movement of the jaws. They lock the upper and lower jaw into position, restricting the ability to move the jaws into positions that may cause damage and pain.
Directive bite splints are far less common. They are only used to help specific jaw joint structural disorders. This specific splint directs the jaws into a specific positions to improve the healing position. It is important to note that directive bite splints must be recommended by a credited dentist and only after a x-ray has been performed to find the jaws structural issues.
Full arch bite splints are made to custom made to fully fit over both sets of teeth. While partial arch bite splints are made to only partially fit over the arch.
